Recommended specifications for laptops/computers
Notes:
-
Laptops are highly recommended: We recommend that all students come with a well-equipped laptop computer. This will allow for free movement and use between classes across campus. Wi-Fi is available throughout our campus.
-
Not a Chromebook: Chromebooks have limited software installation options and limited hardware capability. While they are good for light internet-browsing usage, they will not be able to provide the needed computational power that the majority of college students will require over their academic careers.
-
Gaming Desktops: If you are interested in Esports or just prefer a desktop computer you can connect in all residence halls via Ethernet ports. However, keep in mind that many instructors ask that students bring laptops to class. As a result, we recommend that you also have a laptop for classes.
-
No College-wide requirement: York College does not require all students to purchase a computer or software and instead provides several computer labs for student use. Successfully using our labs alone, however, will require careful time management.
Software
-
Google Chrome
-
Microsoft Office 365
Any major recommendations are listed below.
Note: SOLIDWORKS may not currently work on Windows 11. Please contact your professor or department to ask whether you'll be using SOLIDWORKS and their current recommendation. If you have Windows, you may still be able to use SOLIDWORKS remotely.
What the YCP majors recommend
If any major has computer or software recommendations beyond our minimum suggestions above, they're listed here. Please contact us with any questions.
Additional useful items
Webcam
Headset with microphone
10 foot cat6 ethernet cable
ACC ethernet adapter, if your laptop does not have an ethernet port.
HDMI, mini display port, or USB-C adapter, if your laptop does not have these ports.
500GB or larger external hard drive or solid state drive (SSD)

We recommend using Windows Security, which is a default on all Windows computers. If you have a computer without Security, then we suggest choosing software with up-to-date definitions and routinely scheduled virus scans.
