Computer & Software Recommendations

Our minimum suggestions

Recommended specifications for laptops/computers

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or Apple M Series

  • RAM: 8GB for macOS & 16GB for Windows

  • Storage: 256GB SSD

Notes:

  • Laptops are highly recommended: We recommend that all students come with a well-equipped laptop computer. This will allow for free movement and use between classes across campus. Wi-Fi is available throughout our campus.

  • Not a Chromebook: Chromebooks have limited software installation options and limited hardware capability. While they are good for light internet-browsing usage, they will not be able to provide the needed computational power that the majority of college students will require over their academic careers.

  • Gaming Desktops: If you are interested in Esports or just prefer a desktop computer you can connect in all residence halls via Ethernet ports. However, keep in mind that many instructors ask that students bring laptops to class. As a result, we recommend that you also have a laptop for classes.

  • No College-wide requirement: York College does not require all students to purchase a computer or software and instead provides several computer labs for student use. Successfully using our labs alone, however, will require careful time management.

Software

Any major recommendations are listed below.

Note: SOLIDWORKS may not currently work on Windows 11. Please contact your professor or department to ask whether you'll be using SOLIDWORKS and their current recommendation. If you have Windows, you may still be able to use SOLIDWORKS remotely.
