If you are seeing persistent pop-ups in the corner of your screen claiming McAfee subscription has expired, your PC is infested with viruses, or computer is lock.
Do not panic. Below are directions on how to remove these pop-ups based on your preferred browser.
Note:
- Do not click on the pop-ups or any buttons inside them.
- Do not call any phone numbers displayed in the pop-ups.
- Do not purchase subscriptions or enter credit card information.
- Do not download any files suggested by the pop-ups.
If you have done any of these things above, please visit the LTS Help Desk located within Schmidt Library.
Google Chrome
Clear Extensions and Cache
Extensions
- Open Chrome
- Type in the search bar: chrome://extensions, press Enter
- Remove any unrecognized extensions
Cache
- Open Chrome
- Click the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- Hover over History
- Click Open History Page
- Left Side click Delete Browsing Data
- Set the Range to be All Time, make sure Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files are check.
Pop-up blocker
- Open Chrome, click the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left menu, click on Privacy and security, then click Site Settings.
- Scroll down to Pop-ups and redirects
- Ensure "Don't allow sites to send pop-ups or use redirects" is checked
Remove/Block Notification Permissions
- Open Chrome
- Click the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left menu, click on Privacy and security, then click Site Settings.
- Scroll down and click Notifications.
- Under "Allowed to send notifications", review the list of websites.
- Click the three dots next to the sites and select Remove or Block.
Microsoft Edge
Clear Extensions and Cache
Extensions
- Open Edge
- Type in the search bar: edge://extensions
- Remove any unrecognized extensions
Cache
- Open Edge
- Click the three dots in the top right corner and select History.
- Click the Trashcan icon
- Set the Range to be All Time, make sure Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files are check.
Pop-up blocker
- Open Edge
- Click the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left menu, click on Privacy, search and services, then click Site Permissions.
- Scroll down to "pop-ups and redirects"
- Ensure "blocked" is selected
Remove/Block Notification Permissions
- Open Edge
- Click the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left menu, click on Privacy, search and services, then click Site Permissions.
- Select "All Permissions".
- Scroll down and click Notifications.
- "Ask before sending" is selected.
Firefox
Clear Extensions and Cache
Extensions
- Open Firefox
- Type in the search bar: about:addons
- Remove any unrecognized extensions
- Then go to Settings
- Click Permissions and Data
- Scroll down to "Show warning when websites try to install extensions" make sure it is checked
Cache
- Open Firefox
- Click the three stacked lines in the top right corner and select Settings.
- Click History
- click Clear Recent History
- Set the Range to be Everything, make sure Cookies and other site data and Temporary cached files and pages are check.
Pop-up blocker
- Open Firefox
- Click the three stacked lines in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left menu, click on Permissions and data.
- Scroll down to Blocked pop-ups and third party redirects is checked.

Remove/Block Notification Permissions
- Open Firefox
- Click the three stacked lines in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left menu, click on Permissions and data, then click Notifications.
- Check the box next to "Block new requests asking to allow notifications"
- Remove Website on that list or Remove all Websites
