Google Meet allows real-time meetings by Google. Using your browser, share your video, desktop, and presentations with teammates and customers.
- Note: Employees have the ability to record their meetings. Students should reach out to LTShelp@ycp.edu regarding recording options.
What are the main differences between Google Meet and Zoom?
Hosts can easily record their meetings. The difference is how recordings are stored. Each recording is automatically stored to the host’s Google Drive. Attendance reports and Notes (if used) are also automatically stored in the host’s Google Drive. There are storage limits for all YCP users and the recordings and associated meeting documents need to be managed carefully so the Drive storage is not exceeded. A good alternative for saving recordings is to upload them to Yuja where there is no storage limit.
Google has announced the end of Jamboards starting in October 2024. An alternative product will need to be explored for users
Meet does have options for hosts to restrict who can enter their meetings, but this functionality does not work in the same way as a Zoom waiting room. Access is controlled through the meeting type that is chosen by the host. There are three meeting types available. The default meeting type is Trusted, but meeting types can be set for each meeting.
The Google Meet (LTI 1.3) is now available on the left side navigation pane for every Canvas course. This access allows faculty to set up recordings for class sessions.
Hosts can easily share content. A feature called Picture-in-Picture should be used for hosts to see participant video and any reactions or raised hands while the host scrolls through the shared content.
